NPD Group: Digital PC Game Sales Outpace Retail
The NPD Group estimates that complete the first six months of 2010, digital unit gross revenue of PC games actually managed to surpass sales of boxed retail copies.
For a market that's been marked dead more times than I can count, Personal computer play is doing a remarkably good job of hanging on for darling life. It's declining in the nerve of consoles and it's changing shape in the fount of an increasingly connected fellowship, but it sporty won't seem to go away. The ease and widget of digital distribution is a big component part of that, so information technology's not terribly surprising that whole sales of games in extremity format have apparently pulled ult those of boxed releases.
Over the first six months of 2010, the NPD estimates that digital gross sales in the U.S. hit 11.2 million units, versus 8.2 million building block sales at retail. Steam led the right smart, to cypher's surprisal, with the remainder of the core market divided up between Direct2Drive, WorldofWarcraft.com and Blizzard.com. Big Fish Games brought dwelling the trophy for the casual market.
"One major finding from this latest report is that the 'big got larger' in the first half of 2010, with both Steam and Big Fish capturing a bigger share of full moon-game PC games digital download gross sales than they did senior year," aforementioned NPD analyst Anita Frazier.
Overall, however, social unit sales of PC games for the first one-half of the year were down 14 percent, patc revenues dipped 21 percent. "The overall decline of PC games when combining sales via both digital downloads and personal retail sales is wedged by the elaboration of multiethnic network gaming as healed as the continued expansion of free brave options," Frazier added.
IT's meriting presence in mind that the figures for digital sales are only estimates supported "weighted and projected" consumer surveys conducted aside the NPD. Some Steamer and Snowstorm told GamesIndustry that they did not provide gross sales data to the NPD, while integer distributors Momentum and GamersGate have aforementioned in the past that the psychoanalyst's estimates "don't incline to have much reflection happening reality." And although digital unit sales may in fact be ahead of retail, it's a safe bet that the popularity of Steam gross revenue and cheap digital-only games stingy that actual revenues tranquillise have a long way to go.
